This shoe, alongside the white colorway (653532-100), pays homage to the 1980s skateboarding culture where skaters would use different colored Air Jordan 1s to patch their worn-out pairs, often painting them to look uniform. This "Black" pair is coated entirely in black paint, but as the paint wears away from skating, it reveals the original "Bred" (Black/Red) colorway on the medial side and the "Royal" (Black/Royal) colorway on the lateral side. The mixed color exposure is unique to each owner based on how they wear the shoe.
